I finally made the decision to send my

Babylock Esante Digital Embroidery Machine

on to its next owner.

A couple of years ago I realized

that I just do not have the time

When it rains

It never fails.

Just when we have committed ourselves to

purchasing laminate flooring for the family room,

and we chiseled out the tile in the front hallway,

our refrigerator decided to die.

The part that failed,

was the same part we had repaired,

and replaced, three years ago.

The part that was supposed to last another 15 years.

Well, sooner than we had planned,

we purchased a new refrigerator.

When the delivery men brought it into the kitchen,

we realized the new refrigerator was

1/4" too wide for the opening.

We had to remove the wood trim in order to slide the refrigerator into its opening.

Alls well that ends well in the kitchen for now.

Tomorrow the installation of the new flooring!

We have now commited ourselves to purchasing laminate flooring in our Family Room.

So we decided to remove the tile

in the foyer and entrance hall to the Family Room,

and put laminate there too.

And no, our tile did not pop out easily

like it does on EVERY home improvement show you see on TV.

It was glued with the most adhesive tile glue that was ever invented.

My poor husband had to break every tile into millions of pieces.

Our hallway looked like an earthquake had demolished it.

And the dust and mess was everywhere, especially in my sewing room.

Unexpected

Over Father's Day weekend,

I finally convinced my husband to rip out the carpet in the Family Room.

In true DIY fashion,

we would use concrete "etching stain,"

and,

in about a day,

we have a beautiful Family Room floor again,

something just like the picture!

Beautiful,

low maintenance,

and totally achievable.

Right?

Wrong.

We cut the carpet out, removed the padding underneath in sections.

This is what we found when we finally saw the concrete slab.

Someone started to spray paint their name.

Someone else spilled the paint bucket,

then set the bucket in the spill,

then moved it around a couple of times,

and tried to unsuccessfully to clean it up.

Totally dashing our hopes for staining the concrete floor.

Our only option now was to take the plunge and get laminate flooring.

Right now

A birthday quilt

My daughter is going to be seven the first week of March.

I thought a pretty quilt,
made with prints from the same fabric collection as her duvet,
could be one of her birthday presents.

I also wanted to try my hand at free-motion quilting again.
(I sent my Christmas quilt to be long-arm quilted
by Russ and Rhonda at The Backporch Quilters.)

Now to finish the quilting and then add the binding.
I found the perfect pink polka dot fabric for the binding.

I am excited to see it finished,
before her birthday,
which is in a couple of weeks.

A pretty little duvet

Just before Christmas, I convinced myself to complete a project
which had been floating around in my mind for a while.

I made a twin-sized duvet for my daughter's bed to cover her down comforter.

Which is white.

Which is why it needed a duvet.

The fabric is from "A Beautiful Time" from RJR fabrics
and I love how pretty and feminine it turned out.

And I just loved how excited she is when she gets in her bed now.

The Legend of the Christmas Pickle

The Legend of the Christmas Pickle

The tradition of hiding a pickle inside the Christmas tree comes from a medieval folktale. The story tells of two Spanish boys traveling home from boarding school for the holidays. They were tired from their travels so they stopped at an inn to spend the night. The innkeeper was a mean and evil man. He stole their possessions and then stuffed the boys into a pickle barrel. That evening, St. Nicholas stopped at the inn for a rest. he found out that they boys were inside the pickle barrel. St. Nicholas tapped the pickle barrel with his staff and the boys were magically restore. After thanking St. Nicholas for his help, they continued on home for Christmas.

Through time, this Victorian tradition has been celebrated by hiding a hand-blown glass pickle on the Christmas tree. Families would decorate their tree on Christmas Eve, and, for good luck, the last ornament to be hung was the pickle, usually by a parent, who would hide the pickle in the green boughs of the tree. The first child to find the pickle on Christmas morning would receive either an extra gift left by Santa or a special gift from their parents.

1 cup of Instant Oats

1 tbsp Red glitter

1 tbsp Green glitter

Add all ingredients in a plastic baggy. Close baggy securely and shake well to mix thoroughly. Store in a cool, dry area.

On Christmas Eve, take Reindeer Food outside and liberally sprinkle outside your house so the Reindeer know where to bring Santa's sleigh.

Our suggestion, as evidenced from past successful Santa visits, is to sprinkle the food outside your house near your fireplace (or any other suitable area.)

Bolin Elementary Craft Fair

This was my fourth year as a vendor at the Bolin Elementary Craft Fair. It was great seeing all of the teachers and staff that I know from when Jordan went to preschool there. I had the same booth space as last year, which is at one of the two main doors to the room we where in. It was a great day, sold lot's of bags and sewed all day long too.

Here are a few pictures of my Pink Lemonade Bags booth at the FUMC craft fair. This was my second year as a vendor at this show and I really enjoy being at this church. I had the same booth space as last year, just configured a little differently since they needed access to the stairs for a conference. It is a great location, right next to a main entrance, so traffic was really good all day long.

My booth this year was taped out into a slim isosceles triangle in shape, so it was a little awkward figuring out the configuration of my stands/tables during set up the previous night. I left my set-up unhappy with my booth, and I tossed and turned all night trying to figure out how I wanted to change it. I decided to go an hour earlier the next morning, and completely changed my set up, and the final result is what is shown in the pictures.

Well, Pink Lemonade Bags has officially taken over another room in our house. What used to be the dining room, is now full of bags and my display stands.

I have been making tons of bags to take to all of the upcoming craft shows I have scheduled. I have also combed the antique stores and thrift stores hoping to find some new elements for my craft show display.

My Christmas Quilt is back!

My quilt is back from being machine quilted!

Red, White, and a simple tutorial for you!

4th of July Pennant

Materials needed:

1/2 yd each of red, white, and blue quilting cotton fabric
1pkg of coordinating 7/8in bias tape
rotary cutter
plastic guide/ruler
cutting mat
pinking shears (optional)

Step 1~Iron the fabric and also the bias tape to remove any wrinkles.

Step 2~Using your rotary cutter, trim each fabric piece so that it is 18in square.

Step 3~Then cut each fabric piece into 6in tall strips (you should have 3 strips when finished.)

Step 4~Cut each of those strips into 6in squares (you should have 3 sets of squares per strip, for a total of 9 sets of squares.)

Step 5~Using your ruler as a guide, cut each 6in square into a triangle as shown below. Repeat for all of your prints.

You should now have a stack of red, white, and blue triangles to make your pennant.

Step 6~Measure out 12inches from one end of the bias tape. At the 12inch mark, using your zig-zag stitch, sew a few stitches, then sew a couple backwards to lock your stitches in place.

Step 7~Next, place one triangle set, wrong sides together, 1/2" into the fold of the bias tape (see picture for example.) Sew a straight zig-zag line using a 1/4" seam allowance. When you have sewn the first triangle, place the next triangle set (wrong sides together) in the bias tape and continue to sew. Repeat this step using alternating colors of the triangle sets, leaving 12inches of bias tape free. Make sure to sew a few stitches to lock them in place before finishing.

Optional finishing touch~use your pinking shears on each edge of the triangle.

I had extra triangles left over, enough to give them to my Mom so that she can make a pennant for her house too.

I wanted to hang my pennant on my mantle. Here are two options I came up with, which one do you prefer?

I read Beki's post on her 4th of July wreath project a couple of days ago and wanted to make one for our house. I thought it would be a fun project that Jack could do, except I soon found out his knot tying skills weren't quite up to the challenge. So, I finished while watching movies with the kids. I spent $3.00 for the embroidery hoop and some extra prints to complement what was in my stash.

Week 3

Week 3 is all about assembling our blocks.

I started out by lining up my piles of 2.5in strips so I could get a feel for how the different prints played next to each other. I selected groups of six strips until all of the strips were grouped together.

I grabbed the first group and started sewing.
We are using the standard quilting 1/4in seam allowance,
so I put on my 1/4in guide foot.

It really helps keep your seams straight,
especially when working with large cuts of fabric.

Here are some of the groups of strips sewn out.

Next I pressed all of the seams going in one direction.

Then it was time to cut out quilt blocks.

My finished dimensions were 12.5 in tall by roughly 44 in wide,

so I made 3 12.5 in square blocks from each group.

I had a 12.5in tall x 4in wide remnant from each group,

which I am going to set aside for a future project.

Week 1: Gathering of supplies.

I am participating in the Quilt-A-Long that my friend Dana is hosting.

Six action packed weeks of fabric, quilting, contests, and sharing, ending in a glorious finale where some lucky duck will win the new Janome 6600 sewing machine, just like the one Dana and I both sew with.

Our first week is devoted to gathering our supplies, and most importantly,

deciding on which fabric we want to use.

I have always wanted to have a quilt to be able to bring out seasonally for each of the holidays~my Halloween quilt has been almost finished since January, just waiting for me to get the chance to bind it.

I would love to have a quilt to snuggle my children with in front of a warm fire at Holiday time, especially a fun Christmas quilt.

When I walked into my local quilt store today searching for inspiration for this quilt-a-long, I didn't have to look further than the first display.

Michael Miller's Christmas line had just arrived at the beginning of the week, and I knew it would be perfect. Retro prints, the mix of pastels with traditional greens and reds in this group~totally in love with them all. I can't wait to see how the finished quilt presents itself. The fifth print from the top, the red with really small white snowflakes (?) is the print I decided to use for the binding.

I am truly honored to have been selected for the team this year.

Our team is a true testament to the fact that great people, who make great things, can come together collectively to make great things happen.

The Spring Bash exceeded my expectations on so many levels. I want to say a huge "Thank You" to all of my teamies who volunteered so much of their time and efforts (with no compensation) to help make it happen!

South Side was a great place to hold our show and their management was very impressed with the number of people who came. The traffic really was great (we had so many people show up we flooded the women's restroom~ACK!~which is the ultimate barometer of how successful a show is.)

It was so fun to see so many people from all over the DFW Metroplex come out to support our show and their positive feedback was really encouraging! So many people asked when our next event was. We started passing out fliers for our next show, which will be the Jingle Bash on Saturday, November 21, 2009 at the Son's of Herman Hall.

The DJ and music (when we had electricity and A/C) was the best ever. So good in fact that I wish I could hire him to come to my son's birthday party in a couple of weeks!!

I was lucky to get the few pictures I did manage to take, after helping with the decorations, before the show started. Once they let the crowd in, I did not have a chance to take any more pictures, let alone do any shopping.

Here are a few pictures of the Pink Lemonade Bags booth. I wish that the quality of the pictures wasn't so bad~the industrial flourescent lighting at South Side really does cast a green glow over everything!
